The cleaning aisle is full of products that exist to be sold, not to actually clean. After working in hundreds of homes, here's the short list that pulls its weight.
The essentials (you really only need these)
- A neutral-pH all-purpose cleaner. Method, Seventh Generation, Mrs. Meyer's all work. 90% of your wiping happens with this.
- Dawn dish soap. The blue original. Dilute it for tons of uses beyond dishes.
- White vinegar. Cheap, useful for hard water, dishwasher cleaning, occasional mineral buildup. Don't overuse on stone or wood.
- Baking soda. Mild abrasive, deodorizer, drain refresher.
- Bar Keepers Friend. The cleaner for stainless steel, porcelain, and sinks. Nothing else works as well on cooked-on food in pans.
- Microfiber cloths. A stack of 12-24 in different colors (one for kitchen, one for bath, etc.).
- A good vacuum. Doesn't have to be expensive. Has to work and be easy to drag out.
The "useful for specific things"
- CLR or similar lime/calcium remover — only for the kettle, shower glass, and faucet aerators. Don't use it as a general cleaner.
- Magic erasers — for scuffs on painted drywall. NOT on plaster, NOT on wood floors, NOT on appliance finishes.
- Wood-floor-specific cleaner (Bona is the standard) — if you have hardwood
- Stainless steel polish — once a month is plenty
What to skip
- Branded "kitchen cleaner" / "bathroom cleaner" / "glass cleaner." They're mostly the same diluted neutral cleaner with different scents and labels.
- Disinfecting wipes for general cleaning. They're useful for actual sanitization, but most "cleaning" doesn't require disinfection.
- Air fresheners. A clean home shouldn't need them.
- Drain cleaners (Liquid Plumber, Drano). Hard on pipes. For real clogs, hire a plumber.
- Anything in a spray bottle that promises to "deep clean" with no scrubbing. Doesn't exist.
The under-sink test
If your under-sink cabinet has more than 8 products, you have too many. Pros use fewer products than most homeowners do — the difference is technique, not chemistry.
