"Can you come while we're out of town?" is one of the most common requests we get. The honest answer is: yes, usually — but it depends on a few things.
Why it's appealing
- You come home to a spotless house at the end of a tiring trip
- The cleaner doesn't have to work around you, your kids, or your dog
- Strong-smelling products (rare for us, but for some services) have time to dissipate
- It's the perfect time for a deep clean since everything is undisturbed
Real considerations
- Access: Lockbox, hidden key, smart lock, or a trusted neighbor with a key. Don't text the code to the cleaner via SMS — call or use a secure messaging app.
- Pets: If pets are home, a sitter has to coordinate with the cleaner. Or both happen on the same day in shifts.
- Alarms: Make sure the cleaner has the code AND knows the disarm/arm process. Most false alarms happen here.
- Photo report: Ask the service to send photos after the visit so you can confirm everything went smoothly.
What we require
For away-from-home cleaning, we always do a photo report and a quick text "we're done" message. We also do a security walkthrough — every door is checked closed, no water is running, no appliances are left on accidentally.
When NOT to do it
- If you've never had this cleaner in your home before. Build trust on visits when you're home first.
- If valuables are visible. Move them to a safe or take them with you.
- If you have specific instructions that require explanation. Easier when you're around.
The honest reality
For established recurring clients, we clean away-from-home visits regularly with zero issues. For one-time bookings from new clients, we suggest the first visit happen when you're present.
