If you've never had recurring house cleaning before, the first few weeks set the tone for the whole relationship. Here's what to expect.
The first visit takes longer
Almost always, the first visit is a deep clean — sometimes formally, sometimes just because there's accumulated buildup the cleaner needs to address before regular maintenance becomes meaningful. Expect this visit to take 50-100% longer than your regular ones will, and to cost more.
This is normal. After the first visit, the home is at a baseline the team can maintain efficiently.
The first month is calibration
Even with a thorough intake, the cleaner learns your home over the first few visits. They figure out:
- Which spots accumulate dust fastest
- Which floors handle water and which don't
- Where you keep things (so they can put them back correctly)
- Any quirks — sticky door, picky cat, the cabinet that doesn't close right
Communicate clearly, early
The biggest mistake clients make in the first month is not communicating. If something isn't right, say so — kindly and specifically. Good services want the feedback. The earlier you correct course, the better the long-term relationship.
Examples of useful feedback:
- "The throw pillows ended up in a different spot than I keep them — could the team put them back the way they were?"
- "My partner is sensitive to the lavender cleaner — could we switch to unscented?"
- "The shower glass had streaks — what's the best fix?"
What stable service looks like
After the first 4-6 weeks, you should be able to:
- Not think about cleaning during the week
- Walk into a consistently clean home on visit days
- Recognize and trust the cleaner who comes
- Get same-day responses if you need to ask a question
If any of those aren't true after six weeks, something's off and worth raising with your service.
The boring goal
Great recurring cleaning is mostly invisible. You don't notice it. The home is just clean, every visit, on time, without you thinking about it. That's the goal.
