Central Arkansas summers are brutal. Heat is one thing. Humidity is the cleaning challenge. From June through September, your home is fighting a slow-motion battle with moisture, and that changes which cleaning tasks matter most.
Bathroom mildew
The single biggest summer cleaning issue. Bathroom grout, shower caulk, the corners of the tub, around the toilet base — anywhere moisture lingers, mildew will grow within 48 hours in summer humidity.
- Run bathroom exhaust fans during AND after showers — for at least 20 minutes
- Squeegee shower glass and tile after each use
- Replace bath mats more often (they hold moisture against the floor)
- If grout has gone gray, scrub with a 1:1 baking soda and water paste, then rinse
HVAC drip pans and lines
AC condensate drips into a pan and out a line. In summer, that's running constantly. The pan and line can clog with biofilm, causing the pan to overflow into ceilings or walls. Pour a cup of distilled vinegar down the drain line monthly in summer. This is the single best home maintenance habit for Arkansas summers.
Refrigerator coils
Your refrigerator works harder in summer. Dust on the coils makes it work harder still. Pull the fridge out (carefully) and vacuum the coils once at the start of summer. The fridge will last longer and your power bill will be lower.
Window-adjacent surfaces
Condensation forms on the inside of windows even with AC running. The sills, the lower frame, the wall below — these get moist and can mildew. Wipe them down weekly in summer.
Outdoor-adjacent zones
Mud rooms, entry tile, back porches — between humidity and people coming in sweaty from outside, these get grimy fast. Higher-frequency cleaning here is worth it.
What to do less of
- Wet mopping wood floors. Less is more in humid weather.
- Steam cleaning. Adds more moisture to a home that already has too much.
- Leaving wet towels or rugs unrinsed. Get them in the wash same-day.
